Frequently Asked Questions

Question

Answer

May I (competitor) use the restroom?

There is no rule prohibiting this. If an EPL suspects a competitor was gone for an unusual amount of time, then EPL should note that time and report it to Compliance.

May I (competitor) eat in the Prep Room?

There is not a set rule, but we must ensure we are following the facility rules regarding food in rooms and that there isn’t undue distraction to the other competitors.

May I (competitor) charge my device in the Prep Room?

There is no rule that prevents this.

Can the Extemp Prep Team help with Extemp Genie or the device?

Competitors are responsible for their own devices and software. EPT do not provide assistance.

Does the competitor wait for Comms to go to the Speaking Room?

There should be a Comms staff member nearby the door to “escort” the student as needed. If the facility has special logistics needs this should be discussed prior to tournament start, and any unusual occurrences should be reported to the RC. The answer to the competitor would be that we request he/she wait for Comms if at all possible.

Are observers allowed in the Prep Room (other than compliance for the Rule Of Two)?

No.

May competitors dress down in the Prep Room? (remove shoes, coats, ties, etc.)

There is no rule that prevents this.

Are EPLs supposed to proofread Topic Cards?

No. EPL should help ensure the students draw the correct corresponding card, but no proof reading is required.

Are EPLs supposed to interact with Extemp Judges in Speaking rooms?

No. Comms will handle all Speaking Rooms needs.

If an EPL has a personal general clock to use for the Prep Room is that allowed?

Yes.

Do EPLs manage wifi compliance of competitors?

EPLs do not announce anything regarding wifi compliance and do not actively monitor this. If a rule violation is noted that should be reported to Compliance.

Does the Extemp Team provide escorts to the Speaking Room if Comms cannot?

The Extemp Team and Comms team should be flexible and coordinate as needed to meet this need.

May I (competitor) talk in the Prep Room?

EPL should quiet competitors to ensure an appropriate study atmosphere for all. If there is a behavior concern, EPLs may direct this concern to Compliance.

May I (competitor) leave the Prep Room for any reason?

While the ELP does not restrain competitors, we request they remain in the Prep Room until their designated Speaking Time per the instructions above. If a competitor chooses to leave that would need to be communicated to the Regional Coordinator with notes regarding the context.
