Debate Evidence Reviews: In Person
Judge requests debate evidence via the dashboard or in person in the Judge Hospitality area.
Confirm: Confirm with the judge that the evidence was presented in the round.
- If the evidence was not presented, inform the judge that evidence is only available for clarification if it was presented in the round.
- If the evidence was presented, notify the CL via text that your team is conducting an evidence review.
Gather information: The Speaking Partner gathers initial information and releases the judge.
- The information needed generally includes:
- Is the evidence wanted from Aff, Neg, or both?
- Could you give us a brief description of the evidence?
- During what speech was the evidence requested?
- The Recording Partner should take notes to begin the process of the DER.
- The Speaking Partner informs the judge that they will begin the process of getting the requested evidence and will present the evidence to the judge in the Judge Hospitality area.
Initiate DER with competitors: The Recording Partner contacts the debate team(s) and their parents/designated adults via a group text.
- Text Message Template Here: “Competitor Name(s) are requested for a debate evidence review. For Team Policy Debate, only one team member is needed. Please bring your evidence and join our staff at the (Debate Evidence Review area). A parent is not required to attend but is welcome to join. Please confirm that you have received this text.”
Meet with team(s): CT meets with the debate team. The Speaking Partner shares a brief description of the evidence requested and during what speech it was presented.
- If evidence is requested from two teams, only meet with one team at a time to present their evidence.
- If the team is able to provide the evidence, ask them to wait while the judge reviews the evidence.
- If the team is not able to provide the evidence,
- dismiss the team,
- inform the judge that the team did not have the evidence,
- and begin a CQR, if needed.
Present to judge: CT shows the evidence to the judge, allowing for a short review, not a long study.
- If multiple pieces have been requested, only allow the judge to view one piece at a time
- If the evidence is not the piece requested by the judge, return to the debate team and attempt to collect the right piece of evidence.
Release team(s): Return the evidence to the team and dismiss them.
Report: Inform CL that the DER is completed.
