Participation: How Speech Scripts Work

For all Platform (e.g. Digital Presentation or Informative) and Interpretation (e.g. Biblical or Open) speeches, students must submit a script during tournament check-in.

Script Submission for Platform Speeches

All Platform speeches require a Format 1 script, which must reflect every word in the speech and include a Works Cited page if any supporting material is used. (See Works Cited definition.)

The Format 1 Platform script is uploaded in .pdf (preferred), .doc, .docx, .jpg, or .png format as part of the script submission process.

In addition to the above, Digital Presentation, a type of Platform, requires a Format 2 script as well.

It includes any test slides, the digital slide presentation, as well as the Works Cited slide(s) for any supporting material used in the slide presentation. It is uploaded in .pdf (preferred), .doc, .docx, .jpg, or .png format as part of the script submission process.

Here are Platform Format 1 script examples.

Script Submission for Interpretation Speeches

Every Interpretation speech requires two types of scripts: the Format 1 and the Format 2.

The Format 1 script must reflect every word in the speech and include a Works Cited page if any supporting material is used. (See Works Cited definition.)

The Format 1 Platform script is uploaded in .pdf (preferred), .doc, .docx, .jpg, or .png format as part of the script submission process.

The Format 2 Interpretation script is uploaded in .pdf (preferred), .doc, .docx, .jpg, or .png format as part of the script submission process. It is a photo/scanned copy of all pages used from the original source material, highlighting each of the words used in the Format 1 Script.

Here is an Interpretation Format 1 and Format 2 script example and an Oratorical Thematic Format 1 and Format 2 script example.

Script Use in a Round

While script use is not forbidden in a round, it does carry a penalty.

Competitors must announce script use before the speech begins.

In non-championship tournaments, script use will result in a four-rank penalty. Script use at a Regional or National Championship will result in disqualification from the event.
